Under the Big Top

Happy New Year! We hope that all of our families had a great holiday season. This month’s theme is Under the Big Top and our classrooms have been busy learning about the exciting things that happen at the circus. In addition to the theme, the letters for the month are: A, L, D, and K. The numbers are 19, 20, with a review of the numbers 1-18. The colors are blue and white. The shapes for the month are circle and square. Here is a glimpse of all the fun and learning that took place.

Come one come all to the greatest show on Earth!

We have a spectacular show in store for you. First up is our Infant classroom. These little ones have been busy working on their developmental milestones. In sign language they have been learning the sign for apple and crackers. For literacy, the children have been enjoying listening to stories about Winter.

Next up are our Wonderful Ones. They have been busy  crawling through tunnels strengthening their gross motor skills.  They have also been busy creating beautiful works of art using their little hand prints and singing songs about animals. It has been rumored that lions, tigers, and elephants are being kept in the classroom as sounds of these animals have been heard from parents walking down the hallway!

Hurry, hurry, hurry! Step right up and get your picture taken with our silly two-year old clowns. From pretending to be clowns, trying to juggle, to stomping like elephants; our twos have been busy using their imaginations in dramatic play. They have also been busy learning colors as they sort and classify objects with Mr. Silly Clown.

Dev. 3 has been busy learning about the power of air in science. Using a balloon, the children discovered that air can make some objects move while other objects are to heavy to move. The children enjoyed learning how mixing white and black makes the color gray as they made elephant hand prints. They have been learning how many stars and strips are in the flag and the Pledge of Allegiance.

Dev. 4  has been busy discussing all the fun and exciting things that you can see and can do at the circus. They enjoyed reading “If I Ran The Circus” by Dr. Seuss. The have learned who the author of a book is and what the illustrator does. They even know where the front cover, back cover, spine, and title page of a book are located! The children have been excited to take “trips” to all the continents of the world. They have “visited” each continent and have learned really cool facts about each one. They can even show you where they are on the map. Just ask them and you are sure to get an ear full. The children have been practicing their handwriting and mastering writing their names. I don’t think the big top is big enough to hold all the knowledge our four/five year olds have, Kindergarten here they come!
